Memoirs Of A Geisha

This movie is something that I wanted to see ever since I learned of its inception. For one thing, it is a celebrated novel (especially loved by Madonna!) written by Arthur Golden in 1997. The book spent two years in the best-seller list of The New York Times (selling 4 million copies in U.S. alone) and was translated in 32 languages. Being mostly a movie enthusiast, Memoirs of a Geisha is, of course, a book that I have not read. However, knowing that it would finally be adapted to the screen gave me excitement. Finally, I'd get to know what the hugely popular book is all about.

The second thing that thrilled me to wanting to see this film is because it would be directed by Rob Marshall. Rob could be very well remembered with his adaptation of the play Chicago to the big screen in 2002. It was a movie that I immensely enjoyed! I was excited to see the wonders that Rob could with this book.

Third reason is that it'd be played by an almost-all Asian cast headed by Ziyi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh. It is a rarity that we find an American movie with mostly Asian cast.

After two months of its US release, Memoirs Of A Geisha was finally shown here. However, for some reason, I wasn't able to see it. When I finally had time to do so, the not-so-good reviews about it stopped me from watching it on screen. Reading them was quite a disappointment for me because I had higher expectations for this film -- especially when I learned that Ziyi didn't make it to the Oscar's Best Actress category and the movie was not listed for the Best Picture.

Anyway, not basing my knowledge on the book itself, I'd say that this film adaptation wasn't all that bad as they say it was. From a film junkie's point of view, this one is satisfying enough. It has all the basic elements -- two sisters separated by poverty (one was thrown into the world of prostitution while the other became a slave that would later be train into a geisha), the transformation of the slave girl to the beauteous geisha, the rivalry between the the old and the new geishas, and the quest for love and freedom.

However universal themes they may be, the problem in the film lies that in the fact that the emotions and the struggles failed to transcend themselves onto the audience. The audience remained just a mere spectator of what the characters are going through. But still, we were enthralled to its beauty that seemingly became feast for the eyes. It was like witnessing a catterpillar turned into a cocoon then into a butterfly as it slowly fades into into its surrounding. Fading into the surrounding is what happens after seeing the film -- it was not unforgettable but definitely not that forgettable either.

I do not have a problem with Chinese actors playing Japanese characters. I seemed to get what Sandra Oh is driving at when she said that if an Irish actor could play any European character unquestionably, Asian actors could do the same. However, being a Filipino, I could also relate to the sense of ethnicity of it all. Sandra, though, needs to understand that every Asian country is striving to be known all over the world. It certainly won't help if every people from different Asian countries would be described as one especially that there is a strong history of war and violence against one another. Not to mention that Asians looked differently from each other unlike Caucasians or Westerners. I may be wrong but I don't think Sandra understands it being born and raised in Canada.

Anyway, another problem I had with the film is how contradictory geisha's descriptions are in the film. They were regarded as beauty and talent yet behind of it all, they could be considered as high-class prostitutes. How could this world be aspired by many and loved by those in it when it is an unescapable trap? Because of this, we were not enlightened as to who geishas really were. A controversy about this surfaced when the book was released. A retired geisha, to whom the book was based upon, was infuriated when the author described geishas as high-class prostitutes when they really were not. They were professional artists who entertained guests with their art of dancing, conversation skills, hostessing, etc. (Read more about them here.) However, some people describe them as otherwise. Whatever the truth is, this movie certainly did not do anything but add fire to the rumors.

Was Rob Marshall a disappointment, too? Yes, because he failed to do wonders with the book the way he did with Chicago, the play. I guess, people had expected so much from him and pressured him into doing something marvelous once more. No, because he still was able to do some magic with it. It was a glorious feast that is a worthwhile entertainment - enough to satisfy one's craving but not leaving one full of it. Although, it'd be better not to want some more...

Transamerica

Bree Osbourne (Felicity Huffman) is about to undergo the procedure that she has been longing for her entire life in a week's time. However, she learned that she fathered a son from a previous relationship she had in college. Knowing the existence of the boy, her friend/psychologist insisted that she should deal with this new chapter in her life before proceeding with her gender reassignment.

Unwillingly, Bree travelled to New York from LA to bail her son out. Being concern with the welfare of the boy, Toby (Kevin Zegers), she decided to bring him to LA where he (Toby) wanted to go, as well, to become an actor. Along their road trip, friendship had developed. It even evolved into mutual respect and care when they learned of each other's dark past and secrets. However, the most important thing hasn't been said - she is Toby's father. Toby only knew the truth when he did what could be considered as the most humiliating he did in his life which was -- (see the film, guys!)

Transamerica may not be the best film about trangendered individuals but it is certainly one of the most enjoyable one. It has a witty dialogue and never there was a dull moment in the film.

Bree, of course, is the heart of the film which Felicity Huffman excellently portrayed and nailed to its core! She was able to bring depth and substance to the character the way she does as a desperate housewife. She perfectly emulated an individual who is both a male and a female. She made it seemed that Bree is more than a transgendered individual but rather a person who needs to be respected and loved. Rustom's words during his outing could rightfully be her lines -- "Di ako masamang tao!" (I'm not a bad person!) She truly deserved the Oscar nod and the Golden Globes award!

If Bree is the heart of the film, Toby gives her her soul! It is through Toby that she realized that, apart from caring for herself (the way other people didn't), she could be an inspiration and guide to someone else's life -- in this instance, her son. Kevin Zegers (Dawn of the Dead, Fear of the Dark, Wrong Turn, Airbud) played Toby brilliantly! He was able to show him in a 360-degree manner -- all sides being accounted for: good/bad, confident/insecure, confuse/aware. He showed the boy in the man and vice versa. Moreover, he looked darn good - whether beaten up, dirty or clean! Just plain gorgeous! I describe him as disturbingly beautiful -- because it's so hard to focus on the film when he's on it! (Of course, that's just me! I couldn't say he'd have that same effect on you.)

Transamerica is one of those independent films that needs to be watch by more people more than the blockbuster bulls*its we have around. If only to somehow educate the masses with the knowledge that trangendered people exist and they need to be respected more if not accepted. Aside from that, this film is road trip movie for a father and son relationship -- or I should say, mother and son. Oh yeah, any would do, I guess.

Here a few of the witty dialogues in the films:

Dr. Spikowsky: How do you feel about your penis?
Bree Osbourne: It disgusts me. I don't even like looking at it.
Dr. Spikowsky: And how about your friends?
Bree: They don't like it either.

Bree: My body may be a work-in-progress, but there is nothing wrong with my soul.

Toby: Beauty is relative.
Bree: Not my relatives.

Bree: Just because a person doesn't go around blabbing her entire biological history doesn't make her a liar.
Hitch hiker: I sometimes see my own death (while swimming)...
Bree: Does it involve drowning?

Toby: Your parent's house is a lot nicer.
Bree: My parent's house comes with my parents.

Bree: Did you spend your entire life in New Mexico?
Indian guy: Not yet.

Elizabethtown

I'm soooo loving Elizabethtown from the first ten minutes of the film to its last scene! I can't believe that until now, it hasn't been shown here! It is already out on DVD (abroad) yet still no theater schedule.

The plan for Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) is to design the what would be considered as the greatest pair of shoes of the century! It took him eight years to work on it that his family and social relationships took the backseat. However, he failed on doing such. So he decided to end everything for him but it was cut short when his sister called. She told him that their father died and he needs to go to Elizabethtown for the burial preaparations. New plan was made: visit Elizabethtown, retrieve his father's body, go back to his place, kill himself. This time, he's bent on doing what he has planned to do - without failure!

On his plane ride, he was met by the charming flight attendant, Claire Colburn (Kirsten Dunst). He was so caught up with his situation that he failed to noticed how positively sweet Claire was to him and lost the attraction along the way.

In Kentucky, Drew learned how loved his father was. Relatives, friends, and basically the whole neighborhood remember him for how great his person was. Ironically, Drew feels that he'd be remembered for the greatest mistake he done - his almost-a-billion-loss shoe design.

Panicking and feeling stressed-out, he called Claire. On they've talked for hours and hours about anything and everything till they decided to meet for sunrise and see what's instore for both of them. Atractions were affirmatively definite for them except they couldn't go through with it for two huge reasons: Claire's Ben and Drew's plan. As they make most out of the times they spent together, they learned more about love, life, and relationships. And once they leave Elizabethtown, they'd be two better persons. In love, hopefully.

It is so easy to fall in love with Elizabethtown or any other Cameron Crowe movies for that matter! As with all his films, this one has all the Cameron trademarks with it - lessons about love and relationships, thought-provoking questions about life, country-ish feel yet universal, and soundtrack that goes through what the character experiences, in short, the soundtrack of one's life! However, amongst all his films (Vanilla Sky, Almost Famous, Singles, Say Anything), Elizabethtown is closely comparable to Jerry Maguire. If Jerry Maguire became once the movie of your life, then this one won't be far behind. Good thing that he really made sure that Orlando and Kirsten (to which the characters were written for) do this film and not go for second best.

So see Elizabethtown and be ready to experience how life and death isn't so different at all.

- There were times in my professional life that I begun to question my abilities. I wondered if ever people would see pass through me and think that I'm a fraud. Today, I realized that no one can tell you what you could and couldn't do. You should never let them doubt yourself because only you knows what you could accomplish.

2. Claire Colburn: I'm going to miss your lips. And everything attached to them.
- Awww... Isn't that sweet?

3. Claire Colburn: I want you to get into the deep beautiful melancholy of everything that's happened.
- Once in awhile, I feel that it is a must for people to go through moments (or days) of alone-time and silence. In that way, one would able to comprehend the lessons in life.

4. Claire Colburn: I'm hard to remember, but I'm impossible to forget.
- I'm wondering whether this a compliment or not...

5. Claire Colburn: I've spent so much time thinking about all the answers to the problem, that I forget what the problem actually was.
- So true!

6. Drew Baylor: If you're smart, you'll just wear your shoes and never ask any questions. Just enjoy your footwear.
- While questioning is better for the soul, sometimes, it complicates things even more.

7. Hollie Baylor: It takes time to be funny. It takes time to extract joy from life.
- And it sure takes time to notice that life is wonderful after all...

8. Drew Baylor: In that moment I knew success not greatness was the only god the world served.

9. Hollie Baylor: I was still waiting for everything to start, and now it's over.
- There are people who hold on to things while waiting for that right moment. Until they realized that life passed on and they ended up with nothing.

10. Jessie Baylor: May your loss be met with a hurricane of love.

12. Claire Colburn: I'm just wondering if this whole thing is better on the phone. You're so much better on the phone. Maybe we should never face each other again.
- Ah, the undeniable question for people who instantly clicked on the phone...

The Pacific Northwestern salmonbeats itself bloody... on its quest to travel hundreds of miles upstream... against the current,with a single purpose. Sex, of course. But also... life.

This movie made me think again whether I'd have the same kind of appreciation from people I know when I pass away. 'Cause, I believe that in life, professional success won't matter much in the end but the relationships you made with people and the lessons they learned from you. I wish that once I go, I'd be able to plant enough seeds to be remembered over and over again...

A Bagful of Sharon Vicor Goodies

Eversince Vicor Records re-issued the earlier Sharon Cuneta albums, I've been longing to have them! Of course, apart from being a Madonna fanatic, I am a Sharonian, too! Seeing that the said earlier albums that are remastered to CDs seemed to be running out of stock in different stores, I decided to take my butt off to the nearest mall and buy all the albums I could find! Luckily, I was able to find most of them. And fortunately, they are cost-friendly! Hehehe...

Most of the following titles came out when I don't have much appreciation for music yet. So I don't know much of the songs. However, I get to listen to them later on in my life. And I loved most of them! (My first recollection of the albums I got addicted to were Madonna's Like A Virgin and Lea Salonga's I Am But A Small Voice in 1984. So yeah, I adore Lea, as well)





The next three are considered to be Sharon's "musical trilogy"


This is the newly-released 40th Anniversary of Vicor edition that I never knew existed till I saw them online. It includes some rare tracks like "Nakagapos Na Puso", "Dear Heart" 2 versions, "Pati Ba Pintig Ng Puso", "Kailan Sasabihing Mahal Kita", and some unreleased duets with Gabby and Rowell. It seems that this one a combination of the Best Of series found below.

These two, I bought ahead of the Vicor series. They are from Viva. They are also rarely seen on stores these days especially Ikaw At Ako!

The Audio-Visual Anthology includes music videos of different Sharon movies. This one has the re-worked "Kumusta Ka" which Sharon sung solo for FPJ

Being an OC like myself, I've already uploaded the songs in my PC so that I need not open the CDs whenever I like to listen to them. In that way, I'll avoid scratching them or ruining the covers! Damn! If I had a way to get the songs without opening the CDs, I would! That's what you call OA sa pagka-OC! Hahaha!

I have these two on cassettes (but I have no idea where they are now). Although the 40th Anniversary of Vicor CD is already a combination of these two, it'd be nice to have them. They bring back good childhood memories since my mom bought them for me along with the P.S. I Love You tape back in '87-'88. However, itd be impossible now unless someone who have them would sell them to me.

The two Sharon CDs that are really hard to find are For Broken Hearts Only (my most favorite Sharon album!) & Movie Theme Songs. They are already out of stock here and is ONLY available through Regal Films store in California! Ordering from them and shipping here would cost a whooping $67! Way way much higher than the cost of the CD! Ryan (a fellow Madonna & Sharon fan) and I's only hope is his friend who is in California now...

Tonight (technically), Rustom Padilla came out to Keanna Reeves (and the rest of the world - where TFC is seen) and told her that he is gay. He has been hiding this part of himself for so long now because of the worst experience he had when he was 3 years old. Dressed in a girl's clothes, his father grabbed him by the arm, took the clothes off, and beat him with a belt - the buckle hitting him. When his father stopped, instead of comforting him, his mother scolded him and asked him to stop crying.

That incident scarred Rustom for life. As a child, he didn't understand why he was beaten. Aside from that, the word "bakla" left a bad impression on his mind. Therefore, he dealt with confusion and repression all his life. But he couldn't resist the urges anymore so he decided to leave for abroad. It is in the US that he finally felt like he belong. That he finally realized that gays are not one-dimensional and stereotypical.

He didn't explain why he came back to the Philippines but I guess, it's because he wanted to be accepted by his family and friends for the way he truly is.

When he came back here, I didn't like him anymore. With the blonde hair and (too much) weight loss, he was kinda freaky. Not to mention that I find him pretentious. However, tonight, I found new respect for him with this coming out. I now understand his predicament. Being gay as it is is hard enough, what more if you belong in a family like his - madaming bruskong kapatid at may babaerong ama (na may traditional macho attitude). No wonder, it took him this long to come out. At least now, he'd be a sort of spoke person for Pinoy gays and show the Philippines that not all gays are effeminate.

Now, if only Piolo would do the same, I'd love him to death! *wink wink*

P.S. "People like us" has their own stories to share and they are not pleasant, mind you! But be assure of this, abuse (of all kinds) will always be a part of it!
